Missing teeth create gaps in your smile that impact both function and appearance. When you have a visible missing tooth, it can make you feel less confident when you are in social or professional situations. Whether you’re considering a dental bridge or you’ve already been recommended one by your dentist in Seattle, it’s important to understand exactly what dental bridges are and how they work. In this blog post, we’ll cover the basics of dental bridges, including how they’re used, the different types of bridges available, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. By the end, you should have a good understanding of dental bridges and whether or not they’re right for you.

What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge can close that gap in your smile and restore your complete set of teeth. The false tooth is attached to the natural teeth on either side of the gap, thereby “bridging” it. Dental bridges are usually made from porcelain or ceramic, although they can also be made from gold or other metals.

Types of Bridges
There are three main types of dental bridges: traditional bridges, cantilever bridges, and resin-bonded bridges.

  • Traditional Bridges: Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge. They consist of an artificial tooth (or teeth) that is held in place by crowns (caps) on the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Traditional bridges can be made from porcelain, ceramic, or metal.
  • Cantilever Bridges: Cantilever bridges are used when there are healthy teeth on only one side of the gap. The artificial tooth (or teeth) is attached to the natural tooth on only one side, using a metal or ceramic bracket.
  • Resin-Bonded Bridges: Resin-bonded bridges are similar to traditional bridges, except that they use metal wings or claws instead of crowns to attach the artificial tooth (or teeth) to the natural teeth on either side of the gap.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Dental Bridges
Like anything else, dental bridges have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. It’s important to weigh these pros and cons carefully before making a decision about whether or not to get a dental bridge.

Advantages:

  • Dental bridges can restore your smile and improve your appearance.
  • Dental bridges can help preserve your facial structure by preventing your cheeks from sagging inward due to missing teeth.
  • Dental bridges can make it easier for you to eat and speak properly by restoring chewing function and preventing your teeth from moving out of place.
  • Dental bridges can restore your confidence by giving you back your smile.

Disadvantages:

  • Dental bridges require both healthy adjacent teeth for support and require regular maintenance like brushing and flossing to avoid decay. If not properly cared for, dental bridges can cause gum disease which may lead to further tooth loss. While dental implants are becoming more popular, they are still more expensive than traditional dental bridges.

There are many different options available for replacing lost teeth. At First Smile Family Dental, we offer dental implants, dentures, implants with overdentures, and dental bridges. All these options can replace missing teeth, but each patient may have different needs. A dental bridge is a good option for a person that only needs to replace one or a couple of teeth but wants a fixed-in-place option. At First Smile Family Dental, we offer beautiful dental bridges for smile restorations at our office in Federal Way, WA. I absolutely LOVE Dr. Nguyen! She was kind, compassionate, and exactly what I need in a dentist! She made me feel comfortable right away and genuinely cared about me as a person, AND the health of my teeth!

  • Terry H.

From the time my husband and I walked in the door to walking out it was absolutely amazing!! The care from the receptionist to the technician to the dentist was without a doubt the most professional caring understanding staff. I am not one who enjoys the dentist but they made it so that I was very relaxed and look forward to going again.

Top of the line customer service from the front desk to the dental chair. Really happy with not only the doctor, but her assistant and everyone that worked there. The cleaning was expertly done, all photos and decisions were thoughtfully explained and I learned new things about my teeth that I did not know before.
