Cosmetic Dentistry in Federal Way, WA

While the primary goal of general dentistry is to maintain oral health and treat dental conditions, cosmetic dentistry goes beyond functionality and addresses the visual aspects of dental care. It aims to enhance the overall appearance of the teeth, improve smile aesthetics, and boost self-confidence.

Cosmetic dentistry procedures can correct various dental imperfections, such as tooth discoloration, chips, cracks, misalignments, gaps, and irregularities in shape or size. At First Smile Family Dental, common cosmetic dental treatments include teeth whitening, dental veneers, dental bonding, dental crowns, dental implants, and gum contouring.

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is elective dental care focused on reshaping and changing the way your teeth, smile, and bite look. Cosmetic dentistry is different from general dentistry, which is focused on your overall oral health, cavity prevention, and preventing conditions such as gum disease, bone disease, or infections in your mouth.

Cosmetic dentistry is a general term that includes different kinds of procedures. The first one would be teeth whitening. Patients often come in and ask, "Can I have some teeth whitening?" Teeth whitening is professional dental bleaching that lightens or brightens the color of the teeth to give you a whiter smile.

Second is a dental veneer. A dental veneer is a thin, custom shell that is attached to the front of your tooth. It can be used to cover chipping, cracking, misshapen teeth, or other cosmetic concerns. Some patients also have small cavities in the front teeth, and veneers may be an option depending on their individual needs.

The next one is dental composite bonding. Composite is the same type of material we use for fillings, but it can also be used to change the shape of the teeth. Whether you have a smaller tooth compared to the rest of your teeth or gaps or spaces that show when you smile, dental composite bonding may be a good choice.

Lastly, there is reshaping or recontouring of the gums. Some patients show a lot of gum when they smile, which we call a gummy smile. This can make the teeth look very small or short. By using laser technology, we may be able to reshape the gumline to create a smile that shows less gum and more of the teeth.

What are the benefits of cosmetic dentistry?

The most obvious benefit is enhancing your appearance. Cosmetic dentistry is mainly focused on reshaping and changing your smile to help improve its appearance.

From there, it can also help boost your confidence. You may feel more confident talking to other people, whether you're getting ready for a special event in your life, starting a new job, or simply looking for a smile you feel good about.

Lastly, one of the benefits that I look for most as a provider is improving function. Sometimes you may have a gap between the teeth or teeth that aren't aligning very well. Depending on your treatment, cosmetic dentistry may help close those spaces and make it easier for you to clean and maintain your teeth. I think that's a very important benefit as well.

Can cosmetic dentistry fix an overbite or crowded teeth?

Some patients ask, "Can cosmetic dentistry fix my overbite or crowding?" There are some situations where cosmetic dentistry can help. We first need to do an exam to evaluate whether you can go straight to cosmetic dentistry or if you may need additional treatment, such as limited or comprehensive orthodontic treatment.

We want to make sure your teeth are in a good position before we do something involving multiple teeth to reshape them or change your smile. In some cases, we may recommend orthodontic treatment first.

If you're also missing a tooth, we may recommend a dental implant to replace that tooth as part of your overall treatment plan.

What is the cosmetic dentistry process?

The process starts with coming in for a consultation where I'll perform an exam. We'll check your gum health and look for any cavities or infections. We want to make sure those concerns are addressed before moving forward with cosmetic dentistry.

From there, we may need to take X-rays and scan your mouth. We use an intraoral scanner to create a 3D scan, which allows us to design your smile and present it to you so you can see if it's something you like.

The next step is treatment. If you have cavities that need to be fixed, a tooth that needs to be removed, or an infection that requires root canal treatment, we'll address the necessary dental care as part of the treatment process. Depending on your cosmetic treatment, you may leave an appointment with temporary crowns or another provisional restoration while your final smile is being created.

We'll send the necessary scans and information to the lab so they can fabricate your restorations. Throughout that process, we'll communicate with you to see if there's anything you'd like to add or change. We can then communicate those preferences to the lab so we're able to create the smile you're looking for.

How much does cosmetic dentistry cost?

The cost of cosmetic dentistry depends on what kind of procedure we're doing to give you the smile you're looking for, so the cost can vary. In order to determine that, we want to go through the exam first and then present you with different treatment options.

Cosmetic dentistry, as I mentioned earlier, is generally elective dental care, so many dental insurance plans may not cover purely cosmetic procedures. However, if you need additional treatment, such as fixing a cavity, having a root canal, or placing an implant to replace a missing tooth, there may be dental insurance benefits available depending on your plan. We'll help you understand and maximize any applicable benefits.

There may also be an out-of-pocket portion that you need to pay. At First Smile Family Dental, we have different payment plan options available to help make treatment more manageable. We'll discuss the options with you and determine what may work best so you can pay over time while working toward the smile you want.
